This week: Engage in Being an Active, not Passive, Champion for Something
“Anyone can sit on the sidelines and watch things happen. To make a difference though, you need roll up your sleeves, to actively be a champion and take action.”
Two teenage boys and a pre-teen girl all stood staring at me as I spoke animatedly with them about a fundraiser they were thinking of doing.
A few weeks ago, a friend of mine asked if my son Mac was doing his Christmas fundraiser for The Mustard Seed New Life Community again this year. Mac was hemming and hawing about whether or not to do this. He really desired to do it, but other stuff kept getting in the way.
“Can you set up a Go Fund me page Mom, and then people can donate money there?” my son asked.
“No way!” said I. “If you’re going to inspire others to give, you need to lead the way buddy. Being passive won’t cut it.”
Mac recruited his friend Jesse and Jesse’s sister Jennelle and together they formulated a game plan. They went door to door after Christmas asking people to donate food items or money that would then be donated to the Mustard Seed New Life Community. After a few hours in the cold going door to door, they came back with 6 full bags of non-perishable food items and $75 in cash!
Now we were ready to engage others.
We shared their story of what they did first and put together a Go-Fund me page looking to raise another $150 for the charity to go along with what they raised. And you know what? They reached their goal in a few days thanks to the generosity of people who were inspired by their good work.
In today’s digital world, it’s easier than ever to sit back, upload a social media campaign and cross our fingers, hoping people will buy what we’re selling, will donate to our cause, or provide help without having to truly engage them. But if we lead the way, put in the effort and get people excited that we’re right there beside them in this, that’s where the magic happens.
This week, be brave and engage in being an active, not passive, champion. It’ll be a game changer for you, your company, or your organization.
