Create the Future

September 11, 2017

If you could create the future, would you?

If you answered no, don’t worry, the future will be here before you know it. If you answered yes, your company, organization or community is ready for you to lead it on a path for change and growth.

I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner of a communications firm who said to me: “clients who are willing to partake in stakeholder and community engagement create the future, instead of simply awaiting it.”

I couldn’t agree more.

As an organization, community, or company, if you don’t like the way things are going, simply sitting back and awaiting the future to come your way is pretty much like giving in and taking what you can get. Those who don’t like the way things are going realize they have a chance to

1) change their future

2) figure out their goals

3) work to ensure their teams are on board and capable, and

4) make strategic changes where they can.

I worked with a software company who is doing quite well with their marketing and sales, but had the feeling that they could be doing things better, especially as they look to scale up their operations. After a discussion, we determined that what was needed was to touch base with the current customer base. At this stage of the game, what were customers satisfied with in terms of service and product? What changes did they want to see? How did they want to be communicated with? All pretty basic questions, but the answers and insights were incredibly surprising in some cases, and in others confirmed the direction the team was thinking of heading. The final report of recommendations I developed helped set a course for immediate action, looked at implementing all-important benchmarks for success, and helped provide the service and communications customers were actually looking for, instead of wildly guessing and missing the mark.

For companies, organizations, and communities that proactively engage their stakeholders, actively listen, and then do something with that all important data, they’re truly helping to create the future, instead of simply standing by and awaiting it.
